By having a ship built of wood, we will be able to remain more self-sufficient during the build process as well as when at sea. Fastening planks to frames using wooden trunnels ("tree-nails") will allow us to avoid depending on ordering threaded metal rod in from other countries: we will be able to source, fabricate, install and repair all aspects of fasteners on site, locally.

This wooden hand plane is an example of tools easily fabricated on-site, allowing our build to be more self-sufficient.
