Proving the value of clean shipping

Our mission is to prove the value of clean shipping

Eliminating fossil fuels from the maritime sector is achievable by using advanced technology and simple techniques. We combine innovative, clean technologies with readily-available, low-cost, natural systems to create solutions for a range of needs: from supporting vulnerable coastal communities to moving commodities at global scale.

Developing a resilient, decarbonized transportation sector is one of the most critical tasks of the Anthropocene.

Anthropocene - “The present geological time interval, in which many conditions and processes on Earth are profoundly altered by human impact. This impact has intensified significantly since the onset of industrialization, taking us out of the Earth System state typical of the Holocene Epoch that post-dates the last glaciation.” (Anthropocene Working Group)

The Problem

Ocean transportation operates outside territorial waters. From mining iron ore for ship construction, poverty-level wages and oil spills, to abandoning first-world ships on third-world beaches, the shipping industry has a destructive impact on our planet.

Our Solution

Is to provide a shipping service that is emission-free, pays fair wages and is built using regenerative materials. It all starts with our flagship, Ceiba; a proof-of-concept powered by the wind and 100% renewable electrical energy.

Scalable Vision

Once we have proved the value of clean shipping, expansion of the fleet will begin, including larger designs. These will be determined by the needs of our network, ensuring tailor-made solutions. Change in global policy will play a key role.

Building Ceiba:
45m Square-Topsail Cargo Schooner

We are a group of shipwrights, carpenters, business professionals and sailors. Ceiba is our effort to inspire change in the industry to which we have devoted our lives. Ceiba is a sustainably-constructed vessel that will carry cargo, 100% emission-free. When operational in 2022 she will be the world’s largest, active, clean ocean-going cargo vessel. She will elevate the existing sail cargo movement to a new level while bringing attention to the harmful and pollutive practices of the global shipping industry.

We have already inspired a change of mind in the industry and in policymakers and consumers. When you see Ceiba’s sails unfurl in a harbour, with giant container vessels in the background, you may ask yourself:

Where do my commodities and possessions come from, and what is their carbon footprint?

Our Story

SAILCARGO INC. started with the idea of constructing a wooden sailing vessel for emission-free cargo transportation. Our AstilleroVerde ('green shipyard') shipyard quickly became a project in its own right. It is a beacon for sustainable wooden shipbuilding, supporting education and training in our coastal community and delivering annual tree-planting programs.

Thanks to diverse personal experience within the emerging sailing cargo market, the SAILCARGO INC. team draws from a deep well of knowledge and connection. We are particularly inspired by the environmental, educational and social aspects of this unique sector.

Throughout the project we have received enquiries from around the world about expanding our work. The AstilleroVerde shipyard in Costa Rica has become a model for sustainable practices in vulnerable coastal communities and might be replicated in the Caribbean Basin in the near future. Plans for additional Ceiba Line vessels have already started. Subscribe to our newsletter if you would like to stay updated on developments in our growing company and community.
