Marilyn is an award-winning ocean advocate and published author, specialized in customs administration and foreign trade from the University of Costa Rica. Davys is one of our neighbours in Punta Morales and became a full-time team member in May 2019. Next to being a core member of our shipyard construction team, he also assists in improving his team mates Spanish skills everyday.

Gero was the very first volunteer of SAILCARGO back in 2017, and has been with us right from our modest beginnings. As our long-time sawyer, Gero is working on the rough processing of the woods, using the chainsaw mill, known as Alaskan Sawmill, to cut new timber deliveries into slices.

A boatbuilder from the UK, Connie has a degree in Traditional Wooden Boat Building from the International Boatbuilding Training College, Portsmouth. Connie took over responsibility for the workshops and for running the second small boat building course here at the yard.

A boat builder that came to SAILCARGO INC. from Stuttgart, Freddy worked as an apprentice at one of the last traditional boat yards in Germany - Bültjer Bootswerft GmbH & Co. KG - acquiring a range of skills in restoration and reparation of traditional wooden ships.

Silas received his formal qualification at the Erhvervsskolen Nordsjælland (Craftsman College) and holds other various qualifications, such as Able Seaman from the Martec Maritime and Polytechnic College. Silas has been part of the keel construction and contributed most of his work to the assembling of frames.

Bert is a retired boatbuilding teacher from the Netherlands, who joined our project several times already to teach crucial skills to our team and to teach small boat building to fishermen from our neighbouring village Costa de Pajaros.

LUIS (CR) | Luis has been working as our tractor driver at the shipyard since the beginning, now almost 2 years ago. He comes from Punta Morales and has years of experience in his work, and is very skilled in helping unload and maneuver the lumber deliveries. However, most notably, he has been key in helping the team raise the giant ship’s hanger as well as hoisting the keel into place; two tasks without him we could not have achieved. Luis is known for his friendly smile and strong work attitude as he drives hard without pause to complete tasks at the shipyard as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Luis ha estado trabajando como nuestro conductor de tractor en el astillero desde el principio, ahora hace casi 2 años. Él viene de Punta Morales y tiene años de experiencia en su trabajo, y es muy hábil para ayudarnos a descargar y maniobrar nuestras entregas de madera. Sin embargo, lo más notable es que ha sido clave para ayudarnos a levantar la percha de la nave, y para colocar la quilla en su lugar; Dos tareas sin él que no podríamos haber logrado. Luis es conocido por su sonrisa amistosa y su actitud de trabajo duro, ya que conduce con fuerza sin pausa para completar las tareas en el astillero de la manera más rápida y eficiente posible.

FINN RICHARDSON (UK) | Photographer & Film Maker

Finn has been working to get grants and sponsorships to support the project, maintaining, caring for and improving the gardens and planting of young trees, as well as becoming a full-time film-maker; taking photos and making short videos showcasing the work which has been taking place towards the build of Ceiba.

LUUK VAN BINSBERGEN (NL) | Carpenter & Sawyer

At the “astillero”, Luuk works primarily in ripping; cutting, chainsawing, “Wood-Mizering” a huge amount of the wood for ship Ceiba. He is a Wood Sculptor from The Netherlands, who arrived at the shipyard in November 2018 and cut up the tamarindo keel scarves, cypress planking and guapinol stock for the build of Ceiba.

A traditionally-trained shipwright from France, Joseph worked onsite at the AstilleroVerde for around 3 months; leading work on making the first frames of Ceiba, as well as helping construct the keel.

LEIYDI ROJAS (CR) | Cook & Seamstress

Leiydi is from Punta Morales, Costa Rica. She has assisted SAILCARGO INC. through helping cook delicious warm meals for the crew as part of the Women’s Association, as well as in repairing some of the canvas roofing tarps that shelter the build of Ceiba.
